Parenting Tips for Children Entering Childcare

Two tips for single parents who are struggling to find time to workout

by Jane Fletcher

If you're a single parent and are, therefore, the only person responsible for looking after your child, then it can seem almost impossible to find enough time to exercise. If you're struggling to balance your child care duties with taking care of your own physical health, the advice here could help you.

Find a gym that has a child care centre

The main issue with going to the gym when you're a single parent is that you must, of course, find someone to mind your child whilst you're exercising, and then go and collect your child from this person after you're finished with your workout. This extra journey can cut into your time at the gym, and the expense of paying this person, in combination with your gym fee, might leave you in the red.

The best solution to this issue is to find a gym that has a child care centre on its premises. Gyms that have this facility will often include the price of using it in their membership plan or will only charge their customers a nominal fee for it; as such, it is likely to be far kinder to your wallet than using a nanny's services.

Furthermore, knowing that your child is nearby whilst you're exercising might ease any parental guilt you may feel about doing this self-care activity as you will know that if your child gets upset, ill or needs you for any other reason when you're exercising, the staff at the gym's child care centre can alert you to this issue instantly, and you can go and comfort your child straightaway.

Utilise the journeys you go on to take your child to and from their day care centre

If you need to travel to and from your child's day care facility several days a week and you are finding it increasingly difficult to squeeze in even a quick visit to the gym, then it might be worth trying to utilise these journeys to boost your physical health.

You could, for example, try to find a route to the day care facility that is quite long and features a lot of hills and walk along this route when you go to pick up your child. If you walk briskly on this type of challenging route, your muscles should be nicely sore by the time you get to the centre.

Look for child care centres that you could take your child to.
