What About Your Child's Health? Assessing Child Care Centres

by Jane Fletcher

There are several important factors to consider when choosing a child care centre, one of which has everything to do with your child's health. You can never ask too many questions concerning how the centre will ensure your child stays healthy, and here is a look at some of the areas to focus on.

Sanitation and Cleanliness at the Centre

Observing the highest standards of cleanliness and sanitation will ensure that disease-causing germs and bacteria do not survive. Ask about how well and how frequently the various surfaces are disinfected throughout the day. Are the diaper-changing areas sanitised after every use?

You may also want to know who cleans the different areas of the child care centre. You can reasonably expect the highest standards from a centre that hires a professional cleaning service for the job.

Food and Allergy Management

There should always be a solid policy on food and allergy management at any child care centre that covers the food you pack for your child and any that may be provided at the centre.

Ask about how the care providers keep track of which packed food belongs to which child. How do the carers ensure that the kids don't end up sharing their food? The most important consideration is the centre's preparedness for when a child suffers from a food-related emergency. You will no doubt feel more at ease, knowing that there is someone at the centre trained to administer an EpiPen.

First Aid and CPR

Beyond being able to administer an EpiPen, enquire about the kind of training and certification the staff have relating to first aid and CPR. Are these certifications up-to-date? Equipped with the right training, you can be sure that they can handle just about any emergency at the child care centre.

What Happens When a Child Is Sick?

Do you get called in immediately the caregivers notice your child may be unwell? What is the centre's response protocol in case of emergencies?

How long do kids who are sick have to stay out of the child care centre? What about the teachers? You will no doubt feel better to know that your child is not spending their day interacting with the sickly and being exposed to the risk of catching any communicable diseases.

For your peace of mind and the health and well-being of your child while they are at the child care centre, do not hesitate to ask as many questions as you'd like. You can never be too cautious.
